What's in store for decentralize.today in 2021 and beyond

Let's not kid ourselves, 2020 was not a great year!

Regardless of where you live, COVID-19 has changed the world, and on the privacy front it surely changed things for the worst. Greater surveillance, more hacks, governments talking about backdoors, 2020 seemed worse than any Orwellian fiction.

We've tried to help out with the continuing expansion of the Privacy Cookbook and shared some great apps, reviews and tricks to help you make your lives a bit more secure. And we've tried to keep things as simple as possible and so we want to make 2021 an even more decentralized experience for all of us.

The Fediverse is a perfect example of how decentralization should work and this is where decentralize.today wants to expand. Shortly we will be offering our very own Mastodon instance where we can hook up, whilst it's been great to be on mastodon.social as a starting point when we entered the fediverse but decentralization makes more sense if it is not all on one instance ;)

Mastodon is an open source decentralized social network - by the people for the people. Join the federation and take back control of your social media!

At the same time, we will also launch and offer our own Funkwhale instance. Funkwhale is an open-source, federated podcast platform and I highly recommend using it over all the centralised solutions that are out there. I understand some podcasters prefer Apple and the like in order to reach more people, but how about adding this privacy-friendly solution to your mix and helping it grow.

A social platform to enjoy and share music

PeerTube will be the next of our offerings and hopefully over time people will switch and upload their videos to PeerTube and not just to YouTube, where we all know Google is in control and where they make not just a ridiculous amount of money with other people's work, but also delete videos if they don't fit their world view. Moreover, YouTube has started verifications in some countries and things can only go downhill from there. PeerTube is a game changer and is even working on a live-streaming integration. It is a natural pick for us to be adding to our offerings.

PeerTube is a decentralized video hosting network, based on free/libre software. Join the federation and take back control of your videos!

Nextcloud will also finally be open for registration after successful trialing by our team. I sync my contacts, calendar etc. over Nextcloud and share files with all. It is a better fit than a Google Drive where they own your data, on Nextcloud it's your data encrypted with your key!

Nextcloud is the most deployed on-premises file share and collaboration platform. Access & collaborate across your devices. Your data remains under your control.

We plan to launch our own SearX instance, this means you can search the web privacy-friendly and without Google owning your data and seeing what you're looking at and for! Priceless!

Mobilizon is a platform to organise events, it is part of the fediverse and I believe we should be offering it too!

Let’s take back control of our events ! #JoinMobilizon - Let’s take back control of our events
A user-friendly, emancipatory and ethical tool for gathering, organising, and mobilising.

Pixelfed is an Instagram replacement available on the fediverse. I personally have never used Insta, so I can't comment too much on it, but what I have seen on Pixelfed is simply fantastic, so in support of the fediverse and our challenge in 2021 to further decentralize, so we will launch this as well.

Federated Image Sharing

That is quite a to-do list but you can't stand still these days...

However, Steve Jobs always had one last thing as a punchline, and even though I am not an Apple fanboy, I believe this line just fits...so here goes.

one last thing...

We will offer and host our own Synapse server, that's Matrix to make it clearer. In other words, you can use our own instance from decentralize.today with your Element or other matrix-powered app!

Synapse: Matrix reference homeserver. Contribute to matrix-org/synapse development by creating an account on GitHub.

Once this is all in place we will invite all of you to become part of our instances on the fediverse.

On content, we will continue to focus on our four key areas of concern and interest namely decentralization, privacy, blockchain and cryptocurrencies. We also rely on receiving user-generated content either through direct submission, via our current Ghost based platform or by encrypted and anonymous format.

Over the past year we have featured articles from over 30 different contributors from 20 plus countries (and been read in over 120 countries & territories!). We also cover multiple aspects of every area we look at with several regular features including EXPOSED!, Tweetstorm, Privacy Cookbook, Real Use Case, 21 Questions, our new podcast series plus over 25 content tags.

We have also been looking very closely into Writefreely for content submission and believe we can either integrate it into our current ghost-powered blog or even go fully over to Writefreely, but this will be down the line and if we do go ahead we will make the transition as painless as possible. A blog that calls itself decentralize.today really should aspire to be just that!

Minimalist, federated, self-hosted blogging platform.

Once this is all done we will also publish our hosting & general costs for all the setups for all to see, making things as open as possible. The reason why this is important to us is that whilst we invest a lot of time and energy into the blog we do rely on contributions and sponsorship to cover our costs and so we will be appealing again for your support.

If you have more ideas on services or content you would like to see on decentralize.today, contact us on Mastodon, Telegram (yes we still have that, even though it's not federated) and on Matrix (Element) where we have a great room waiting for you to get in touch with like-minded people and, of course, via email!

Let's make 2021 different, more decentralized, yet more engaged and more engaging.

Privacy matters as do small steps to defend it, and as more decentralization happens so we can better protect ourselves and those around us!

Stay safe and stay secure! And remember the future won't be centralized!
